BLUE TULIP

Will Sheff ha proprio l'aria del cantastorie: i capelli arruffati, gli occhiali da nerd che mette e toglie di continuo, la camicia bianca prima, ed una semplicissima t-shirt alla fine, e quell'aria svanita da menestrello, accentuata dal modo di tenere e suonare la chitarra, e dalla voce intensa e scanzonata allo stesso tempo, tanto da sembrare ubriaca. Gli Okkervil River fanno un rock sano, semplice, diretto, al punto che se chiudi gli occhi li vedi, quei paesaggi desolati del Texas: sì, proprio quelli che hai visto in decine, forse centinaia di road movie americani. Tuttavia non mancano spunti di grande originalità, come il sarcastico andamento country di Singer Songwriter, la forte malinconia di Blue Tulip, giusto per citare due esempi dall'ultimo album, The Stand Ins, nonchè momenti preziosi ripresi dai dischi precedenti, come una splendida For Real.
Un concerto autentico e genuino, che la cornice intima del Circolo degli Artisti, ed un bicchiere di birra in compagnia, rendono speciale.

OKKERVIL RIVER/CIRCOLO DEGLI ARTISTI/ROMA, 20 NOVEMBRE 2008

MUSICA: ASCOLTI MULTIPLI

BATCAT/MOGWAI


Sto ascoltando un sacco di musica nuova, in questo scorcio di fine estate. Tutta piuttosto interessante. È un buon periodo. Mi piacciono i Glasvegas. Sono giovanissimi, vengono da Glasgow, città dalla scena molto fertile, ultimamente. Magari non inventano nulla, in giro per la rete li definiscono i nuovi Manic Street Preachers, ed in effetti l'intensità della voce di James Allan ricorda quella di James Dean Bradfield, ma ascoltarli è davvero un piacere. Mi piace il nuovo album dei Verve, Forth: è rilassato e rilassante, scorre via tranquillo, e lascia il segno. Mi piacciono anche i Kings Of Leon (il singolo Sex On Fire funziona così bene da rischiare la sovraesposizione), ed i Mogwai, che non tradiscono mai, e stavolta aggiungono un tocco di durezza alle loro trame strumentali (come nella potentissima Batcat, primo singolo estratto dall'album). E mi piacciono gli Okkervil River, con le loro ballate da saloon pungenti e malinconiche. Non mi dispiacciono neanche gli I Was A Cub Scout: ironicamente si definiscono una boy band, ma le loro tastiere intriganti hanno qualcosa in più. Del nuovo album di Peter, Bjorn And John mi è rimasto in testa il primo pezzo, Inland Empire, il resto non mi ha colpito granchè. L'elettronica dei Glass Candy è divertente, ma niente di speciale. Gli Absentee sono profondi, ma alla lunga mi stancano. Anche i Metronomy li ho trovati un po' noiosi. I Ra Ra Riot mi sembrano roba da ragazzini. Infine, mi hanno deluso Born Ruffians e Late Of The Pier: ne avevo letto molto bene in giro, ma non mi sono sembrati all'altezza. Ma mi ripropongo di riascoltarli, promesso.
Per ora, nell'iPod, ci sono i Mogwai.
