In tanti non l'hanno capito, soprattutto quelli che si aspettavano una replica di An End Has A Start, un po' come successe ai Radiohead nel 2000 con Kid A (oggi considerato da molti il miglior disco del decennio...), al posto del quale parecchia gente avrebbe preferito una fotocopia di Ok Computer, ma In This Light And On This Evening è un lavoro decisamente importante, oscuro e monumentalmente anni ottanta a partire dalla copertina, illustrata in stile art decò, fino ad ogni singolo suono dei brani che lo compongono. La produzione di Flood c'è e si sente, il talento degli Editors pure, e Papillon è già il nuovo inno dei dancefloor alternativi. Tra le cose migliori di quest'anno anche Dark Night Of The Soul, il progetto di Danger Mouse con Gli Sparklehorse e l'apporto creativo di David Lynch, ed il ritorno dei danesi Mew, con No More Stories Are Told Today I'm Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories The World Is grey I'm Tired Let's Wash Away. Una menzione, infine, per i vincitori del sondaggio del blog: secondo i (pochi) lettori che hanno votato, l'album più bello del 2009 è Fantasies, dei canadesi Metric.
Un ritornello straripante, di quelli che una volta ascoltati, non si dimenticano più. Dal vivo, poi, è assolutamente dirompente. Il brano che i Depeche Mode non hanno mai scritto. Ma gli Editors sì.

IL VIDEO DELL'ANNO: WRONG/DEPECHE MODE (Patrick Daughters)
L'inquietante video di Patrick Daughters per il brano dei Depeche Mode, che mostra un uomo mascherato e legato al posto di guida di un'auto lanciata nel traffico in retromarcia, sembra quasi l'intro di una puntata di CSI: peccato che non ci sia stato alcun seguito, e soprattutto che nessuno ci abbia svelato il colpevole...
Come successe ad Interpol ed Editors, si sono beccati subito l'etichetta di nuovi Joy Division, ma al di là dei facili paragoni, i giovanissimi White Lies hanno debuttato con un disco di buone canzoni pop dalle atmosfere dark, accuratamente suonato, registrato e prodotto. Il che, al giorno d'oggi, non è affatto cosa da poco.
IL CONCERTO DELL'ANNO: EDITORS + THE MACCABEES + WINTERSLEEP (Roma/Teatro Tendastrisce) 03/12/09
SMOKERS OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL DOORS
Quasi un'insolito quanto apprezzato piccolo festival invernale, quello che si è tenuto lo scorso 3 Dicembre al Teatro Tendastrisce di Roma: tre band di ottimo livello al prezzo (onesto, pergiunta) di una. Wintersleep, The Maccabees, ed infine gli Editors, che hanno portato sul palco il nuovo album In This Light And On This Evening con un'esibizione davvero emozionante, da cantare a squarciagola dal primo all'ultimo pezzo. Molto bello anche il concerto dei Mogwai all'Auditorium, la scorsa estate.
La versione alcolizzata, lo-fi e meno chirurgica di Chuck Palahniuk: Nick Cave, alla sua seconda opera di narrativa, disegna un personaggio comune e straordinario allo stesso tempo. Bunny Munro è ognuno di noi, riflesso nello specchio, la mattina dopo una sbornia presa per dimenticare uno sbaglio.
La somma del cinema di Tarantino, un film sulla guerra senza neanche una vera scena di guerra, a pensarci bene, ma incredibilmente ricco di citazioni (particolarmente gustosa la battuta di Brad Pitt sui combattimenti negli scantinati...) sfumature linguistiche e dettagli feticisti, attraverso il quale il regista riscrive la storia, dando letteralmente alle fiamme il grande schermo.
Ok, il film sarà pure roba da ragazzini, ma la colonna sonora, curata curata dal musicista francese Alexandre Desplat, è da leccarsi i baffi, anche se sporchi di sangue: dai Death Cab For Cutie ai Grizzly Bear, da Thom Yorke agli Editors, dai Muse ai Killers, tutti presenti con brani inediti.
Forse non sarà un'opera indimenticabile, ma l'ultimo disco di Neffa è decisamente godibile, e ricco di melodie interessanti. Ascoltate dal vivo, poi, le canzoni di Sognando Contromano assumono ancora più carattere, scrollandosi di dosso quell'aria un po' troppo leccata che purtroppo molto spesso caratterizza le produzioni del pop made in Italy.

La curiosità di ascoltare dal vivo i nuovi brani degli Editors era grande: qualcuno, di fronte alle sonorità anni ottanta, ha storto il naso, ma a giudicare dalla gente che ha gremito il Tendastrisce per l'occasione, devono essere una minoranza. Si parte, e non potrebbe essere altrimenti, con la title-track dell'ultimo album. Poi però, a seguire, An End Has A Start ed All Sparks, e da lì in avanti, la band attinge senza soluzione di continuità dall'intera discografia, a conferma del fatto che le suggestioni new wave di In This Light And On This Evening legano alla perfezione con i tratti più rock degli lavori precedenti: e così si va dall'esplosiva Bullets all'alienante The Big Exit, dalla stroboscopica Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors all'onirica Like Treasure, dall'emozionante When Anger Shows alla monumentale Bricks And Mortar senza che l'intensità cali anche solo per un istante. Il gioco di luci ed immagini sullo sfondo dona geometria alla musica, e la teatralità (meno statica che in passato) di Tom Smith ne fa sempre più l'erede mediatico, oltre che vocale e compositivo, di Dave Gahan. Ce n'è un po'per tutti, come si legge a chiare lettere durante l'esecuzione, splendida, di Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool: dai fan della prima ora, premiati con il b-side You Are Fading, a quelli che li hanno scoperti da poco, magari con Papillon, l'unica canzone, da anni a questa parte, in grado di togliere lo scettro di pezzo più suonato nei dancefloor alternativi a Love Will Tear Us Apart dei Joy Division, passando per quelli più distratti, che avranno gradito Munich, forse a tutt'oggi la hit più famosa del gruppo. Due parole infine, per i supporter (di lusso): i candesi Wintersleep, decisamente interessanti e da approfondire, ed i Maccabees, simpatici, ma un po' ripetitivi.

L'attesa più lunga e spasmodica dell'anno è giunta al termine: ecco finalmente In This Light And On This Evening, terzo capitolo della discografia degli Editors (dopo gli acclamati The Back Room del 2005 ed An End Has A Start del 2007), ufficialmente in uscita il prossimo 12 Ottobre. Le aspettative erano tante, e non sono rimaste affatto deluse, anzi... Vediamo nel dettaglio:
01. IN THIS LIGHT AND ON THIS EVENING
Di sicuro non è un caso che il primo brano sia proprio con la title-track, alla quale spetta il compito di introdurci in questo nuovo viaggio. Il testo, una sorta di omelia londinese recitata da Tom Smith, va quasi a sovrapporsi alle sensazioni cupe ed autunnali, dal sapore cinematografico, del sottofondo.
02. BRICKS AND MORTAR
Il manifesto dell'album, con un intro che fa pensare ad Enola Gay degli OMD, ed i sequencer (presi in prestito dai primi New Order) che sembrano rincorrersi, disegnando la linea melodica della traccia.
03. PAPILLON
Il singolo apripista, già notissimo, ascoltato e, perchè no, ballato un po' ovunque. Ottimo appeal, ma con la forza di un grande pezzo rock. E quell'irresistibile refrain "It kicks like a sleep twitch!". A voler essere davvero pignoli, forse la versione edit del singolo è migliore, più essenziale.
04. YOU DON'T KNOW LOVE
Intesa ed epica, ricorda le cose migliori dei Depeche Mode, e con il suo coretto si candida a potenziale singolo.
05. THE BIG EXIT
Rumorosa e dissonante, è forse il momento più oscuro del disco. Il falsetto estraniante di Tom, inseguito dalle ossessive doppie voci e sostenuto dalle algide tastiere, sembra vagare verso mondi freddi e lontani.
06. THE BOXER
Un altro gioiello new wave: dai Japan ai Cure, passando per la Kate Bush di Running Up That Hill.
07. LIKE TREASURE
Dolce, melodica, onirica. Una gemma. La coda finale ha qualcosa dei Radiohead, e scusate se è poco.
08. EAT RAW MEAT = BLOOD DROOL
Già ascoltata dal vivo, in studio è ancora meglio: il ritornello, assolutamente dirompente, si staglia sulle strofe disegnate da note di sintetizzatori appena accennati. Nella parte centrale Smith riscopre il piano, prima dell'esplosione finale.
09. WALK THE FLEET ROAD
L'unica vera canzone lenta in scaletta: una pausa di riflessione, una preghiera finale, dove gli opposti si attraggono, permettendo a suoni gelidi di sposarsi alla perfezione con cori che sanno di gospel.
Con questo lavoro, i ragazzi di Birmingham si affrancano definitivamente dal duopolio con gli Interpol, nella corsa a nuovi Joy Division, mostrando piuttosto quello che la storica band sarebbe potuta diventare se Ian Curtis non ci avesse lasciati. Le basi ritmiche possenti ed alienanti al tempo stesso, le atmosfere glaciali ma vigorose, i testi malinconici ma di forte impatto: qualunque cosa significhi, gli Editors sono i nuovi alfieri della musica dark.
Tanto per passare il tempo, in questa caldissima giornata d'estate, mi sono messo a frugare nel passato, recente e remoto, ed ho cercato di ripercorrere l'elenco di tutti i concerti ai quali ho assistito, e dopo aver raccolto gli indizi, le prove, le memorie ed i biglietti superstiti, ho stilato una classifica, un'autocertificazione del mio stato di servizio: il premio fedeltà va di diritto ai Cure, con 9 presenze, a seguire Duran Duran e Radiohead (in rimonta, speriamo). Ho volutamente omesso gli artisti italiani, che giocoforza è più facile riuscire a vedere dal vivo, e sicuramente, ma in modo del tutto involontario, avrò dimenticato anche qualcun altro. Ad ogni modo, ecco la graduatoria completa, in attesa dei prossimi impegni:
