Che non si fossero mai incontrati, finora, sembra quasi impossibile, e non poteva che essere una delle storie più dark di tutti i tempi, Alice Nel Paese Delle Meraviglie, a far incrociare le loro strade: stiamo parlando di Tim Burton e Robert Smith. Il leader dei Cure, infatti, su richiesta di un amico, come si legge nel post sul sito ufficiale della band, ha registrato una cover del brano Very Good Advice (già presente nella versione Disney del 1951 del classico di Carroll) per il film girato dal regista americano (in uscita all'inizo del mese prossimo) che verrà inclusa in un album chiamato Almost Alice, che andrà ad affiancarsi alla colonna sonora originale, composta da Danny Elfman. Il disco, al quale partecipano, tra gli altri, anche Franz Ferdinand, Wolfmother ed Avril Lavigne, sarà pubblicato tra un mese esatto, il due marzo.

01/UNDERNEATH THE STARS
Il lungo intro strumentale (che la dice lunga su quanto la nuova scena del rock strumentale, dai Mogwai fino a God Is An Astronaut, debba ai Cure) sale morbido sino al crescendo che conduce alla voce di Robert Smith, annegata negli effetti di eco lontane. Inconfondibile.
02/THE ONLY ONE
Il primo singolo tratto dall'album, uscito lo scorso maggio. Ricorda High, da Wish. Solare, divertente, melodica. L'anima pop dei Cure.
03/THE REASONS WHY
Il suono è quello di The Cure del 2004. Rock, senza tante concessioni, quasi scarno. Il testo è oscuro, molto più di quanto l'andamento del brano potrebbe far pensare.
04/FREAKSHOW
Ascoltata fuori dal contesto, come singolo, sembrava quasi uno scherzo. Inserita nell'album acquista valore: è ironica e scanzonata, sì, ma è un gioellino di follia psichedelica, quasi teatrale. Dal vivo, infatti Robert la recita, più che cantarla...
05/SIRENSONG
Uno dei pezzi migliori del disco, sin dal primo ascolto. L'incedere della base ritmica ricorda Jupiter Crash da Wild Mood Swing, quasi un valzer. Il testo e la melodia sono intensi, romantici, persi.
06/THE REAL SNOW WHITE
Ancora un pezzo rock, molto suonato, solido, essenziale. Uno dei manifesti del sound dell'attuale band a quattro elementi.
07/THE HUNGRY GHOST
Introdotta da un buon riff, è uno dei brani più radiofonici dell'album. Il cantato è melodico, con la voce di Robert Smith che si spinge in alto, forse fin troppo.
08/SWITCH
Chitarra distorta, batteria ossessiva, basso sostenuto. All'inizo ricorda qualcosa dei New Order di Get Ready, poi si contorce sul suo ritmo. Niente male.
09/THE PERFECT BOY
Melodica, immediata, assolutamente pop. L'ultimo singolo della serie, prima dell'uscita dell'album. Non è memorabile, certo, ma le radio ci vanno a nozze, ed infatti si sente spesso.
10/THIS. HERE AND NOW. WITH YOU
Fa pensare ad alcune cose da Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, con le parole del testo incastrate come tessere di un mosaico, ed il lungo ritornello in crescendo. C'è da giurare che Robert si sia divertito un sacco a scriverla e cantarla.
11/SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD
Il migliore dei 4 singoli a cadenza mensile usciti per presentare l'album, secondo me. Pare risalga addirittura al periodo di The Head On The Door del 1985. Il ritornello è etereo, quasi distaccato dal resto della canzone, che si appoggia su un riff secco, che sa di classic rock.
12/THE SCREAM
L'ho pensato dal vivo, lo confermo su disco. Il pezzo migliore dell'album. Anzi, una delle cose più belle della produzione recente dei Cure. Parte piano piano, con un ritmo che trasuda alienazione e ricorda i suoni di Seventeen Seconds, e cresce, fino a scoppiare letteralmente in un urlo liberatorio, drammatico, violento. Mi ha fatto pensare a Forever, b-side disperso nella discografia del gruppo, ai tempi di Pornography o giù di lì. C'è quella stessa intensità, quella voglia di combattere questo malessere, trovare una cura... Fantastica.
13/IT'S OVER Il finale che non ti aspetti: un pezzo da apertura, rumoroso, fragoroso, veloce, a tratti rabbioso. Il suono distorto riporta a Wish, mentre il cantato concitato si spinge ancora più lontano, fino a Shiver And Shake da Kiss Me, o Give Me It da The Top. Nonostante il titolo ed il testo, più che la fine, sembra un nuovo inizio, un'anticipazione, un passaggio. Un assaggio, di quello che sarà il futuro?
Questo è 4:13 Dream. Dopo giusto un paio d'ascolti, a caldo.
Il 23 Ottobre esce il nuovo album dei Cure, 4:13 Dream, e così Robert Smith ha approfittato del grande carrozzone di MTV per presentare dal vivo, in anteprima, i nuovi brani. La scaletta della prima parte del concerto infatti, ricalca per intero la tracklist del nuovo disco. Ascoltato dal vivo, 4:13 Dream fa l'effetto di un buon vino rosso. La prima impressione è notevole: l'etichetta ed il bouquet sono di prim'ordine. La traccia d'apertura, Underneath The Stars, è amabile: il lungo, inconfondibile intro strumentale si arricchisce di sentori di Mogwai e God Is An Astronaut. Poi la sensazione in bocca si fa pop: una sofferta The Only One (ammettiamolo, Robert è un po' giù di voce), che diventa meno zuccherina e forse ci guadagna, The Reason Why, Freakshow, Switch, fino a The Perfect Boy. Melodie rotonde, suoni fruttati, dolci, facili. Sul finire, però, il retrogusto si affina. Sleep When I'm Dead (personalmente lo considero il migliore dei 4 singoli già usciti) è rock, tannico. The Scream è il punto più alto : Il sapore aspro e deciso riporta alla mente note giovani, passate, ma ancora persistenti, come quelle di Pornography. Come un buon vino rosso, dicevamo, questo nuovo lavoro ha bisogno di respirare, decantare, per poi rivelare completamente la sua importante struttura. Robert dice: thank you, that was 4:13 Dream, see you in a second... Come un brindisi, Lullaby apre la seconda parte dello show. La gente è tanta, si dice 100.000 persone, ma si sta bene, c'è aria da respirare e spazio per muoversi. Si prosegue pescando a piene mani tra i ricordi: Fascination Street, The Walk, Love Song, una splendida esecuzione di Just Like Heaven. Boys Don't Cry chiude lo show. Quasi due ore, alla faccia di chi pensava che avrebbero suonato solo 3 o 4 pezzi. Chi li conosce lo sa, i Cure sul palco non tradiscono mai. Ora non resta che aspettare: 10 giorni, e si passa in enoteca... Ehm, al negozio di dischi, a prendere 4:13 Dream.

A vederlo girovagare per il palco come se fosse capitato lì per caso, spaventato dalle luci e dalla confusione, le mani timide nascoste dalle maniche troppo lunghe ed il sorriso imbronciato, ti chiedi come possa essere diventato un'icona del rock. A sentirlo cantare, nonostante gli anni che passano ed il peso che aumenta, ci si domanda dove trovi ancora tutta quella voce, allo stesso tempo così potente e così sottile. Tra un pezzo e l'altro, sommessamente, quasi avesse paura di disturbare, Robert Smith sospira "thank you", e ti viene da pensare "ma come, sei tu che ringrazi me?". Grazie a te piuttosto. Grazie ai tutti voi. Suonano forte, i Cure versione quattro moschettieri, per oltre tre ore: senza tastiere, i suoni si fanno più diretti, essenziali, ruvidi. L'inconfondibile tintinnio dei campanelli che introducono Plainsong, le luci verdi che colorano From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea, quelle stroboscopiche che fotografano gli istanti più duri di One Hundred Years. Le parole, sempre inventate all'ultimo momento, dell'ultima strofa di Disintegration. E quell'intensità, quel senso di appartenenza che fanno pensare ad un rituale, più che ad un semplice concerto. La scaletta alterna pezzi celebri, di quelli che la gente fa il coretto, come Pictures Of You e Just Like Heaven, a pezzi eseguiti più raramente, come Push, da brividi, e Primary, oltre ad un paio di assaggi del nuovo album, in uscita in primavera. Gli encores (sarebbe riduttivo parlare di bis) sono uno show nello show: il primo è interamente dedicato a Seventeen Seconds, mentre il secondo scivola allegro sulle note dei pezzi più pop, gustosi come merendine durante la ricreazione. L'ultimo invece chiude il cerchio, riportando la mente al 1979, anno in cui tutto è cominciato, e si conclude con un'incredibile versione di Killing An Arab, che terminata la quarantena antiterrostistica, riesplode più potente che mai. Tre ore e cinque minuti, ma potrebbe essere stato solo un attimo. Ancora una volta.
