Parliamoci chiaro: per me recensire un nuovo disco di PJ Harvey è un po' come dare un giudizio sul nuovo vestito della tua fidanzata: non le diresti mai che non è bello, e che non le sta bene. Quindi sarò fazioso, lo confesso sin da subito. Detto questo, A Woman A Man Walked By, secondo capitolo della collaborazione con John Parish (dopo Dance Hall At Louse Point del 1996), regala emozioni sin dall'inizio, a cominciare dal primo singolo, Black Hearted Love, che riporta alla mente il suono di metà anni novanta di To Bring You My Love, fino alle variazioni sul tema folk di Sixteen, Fifteen, Fourteen e The Soldier, con quel banjo che sembra arrivare da New Orleans, o giù di lì. Sui tappeti musicali stesi da Parish, la nostra si diletta con tutto ciò di cui la sua voce è capace: dalla dolcezza di April alla rabbia di Pig Will Not, dall'intensità di Passionless, Pointless alla schizofrenica isteria della title-track, in un'alternanza senza soluzione di continuità di pezzi lenti e riflessivi e veloci e trascinanti. Ecco, l'ho detto, questo vestito le sta d'incanto: come sempre, Polly Jean è bellissima.
